Virginia Military Institute- Science Building Renovation

A twenty-four year old building, Maury-Brooke Hall provides a home to the Chemistry and Biology Departments for Virginia Military Institute. Progress in the science fields and changes in health and safety standards had rendered many of the laboratories and classrooms outdated. Featuring 11 teaching labs, 14 research labs, 20 offices, 5 classrooms and a three-bay greenhouse, Convergent Technologies was asked by Virginia Military Institute (VMI) administrators to provide recommendations and construction administration services for audiovisual equipment and infrastructure for the project. VMI programming needs were identified by several members of its faculty, and VMI IT staff also added input to facilitate integration of the new building with existing IT networks. Convergent Technology reviewed proposed audiovisual equipment in order to provide a system that met the needs indicated by VMI faculty, while also allowing for future growth. Unique infrastructure solutions were needed to accommodate mobile lecterns, and were accomplished by close coordination with faculty and in-person inspection of classroom spaces. Further recommendations were made to specify conduit sizing, floor and wall-box placement, and projection screen sizing. This multi-phased renovation project remained in service during construction and was rededicated November 2013.
