[slideshow_deploy id=’3154′]

Architect:SmithGroup

Location: Phoenix, Arizona

Construction Cost: $135 Million

Project Size: 175,000 gsf

Designed to facilitate complex systems research and development that integrates the most advanced simulation, data analysis, engineering and evaluation techniques, The National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s Energy Systems Integration Facility plans to transform the nation’s energy infrastructure. This state of the art facility will support not only research and engineering, but the testing and analysis of components and systems to enable economic, reliable integration of renewable electricity generation, fuel production, storage and building efficiency technologies. Convergent Technologies is providing complete design services for audiovisual systems with associated supporting infrastructure. This project features a high performance data center (HPDC) consisting of a 2.1teraflop supercomputer, supporting by an Insight Collaboration Room with a three-dimensional (3D) partial immersion cave. The HPDC also includes a visualization room with a videowall in the 24-32 mega pixel range. CERBS offers a rear projection cube 2×6 videowall Control Room and will simulate the typical large utility control systems, as well as integrate the display of real-time and faster than real-time data sets from any of the nine (9) connected experimental bays. Additional spaces to receive technology systems include secure videoconference rooms, collaborative conference rooms, and a common area tour system for the public with displays throughout the building. Displays on tour routes in the common areas will be timed and automated with a control system. This project is planned for completion in 2013.

Maricopa County Community College District: Mesa CC – Health Wellness Building

[col3]This 38,000-square-foot refurbished building brings together MCC’s nursing and exercise science departments; compatible disciplines which focus on healthy lifestyles and quality healthcare. The project called for updated an existing 1970s structure and expanded it with an exterior wrap to include 10 new classrooms which comprise 11,000 square feet. The building’s design integrates oversized glass walls within masonry block for transparent classrooms to encourage a shared interest in each discipline. In one part of the building a nursing student can practice basic nursing skills, such as medication administration, patient teaching or delegation of tasks to health care team members, while on the other side of the building an exercise science student can have a hands-on experience using diagnostic technologies. Additionally, the facility features six and ten bed simulation units, an OB lab, and hospital room lab, in addition to two debriefing rooms. The collaborative classrooms offer flexibility of space by allowing for easy transformation from lecture to lab space. CTDG’s Scope of work included the design of audiovisual systems with associated supporting infrastructure including audiovisual simulation systems, infrastructure for telecommunications systems, interior sound isolation and HVAC noise control. Spaces to receive technology systems include faculty spaces, simulation labs, a Learning Resource Center, Skill Practice Rooms, classroom spaces, a Human Performance Lab, the Applied Movement Lab and additional health science classrooms. Specified educational technology systems include audiovisual presentation and recording, program/speech reinforcement, custom smart presenter’s lecterns, multimedia audiovisual systems, and abilities to present video based or computer generated presentations via LCD projection systems. All lecture and lab spaces have significant technology infrastructure to support current and future state-of-the-art teaching equipment and methods. Budget constraints presented unique challenges to this project. The simulation systems budget for this project was significantly less than previous similar projects for the district, yet all the state-of-the art features were still desirable to the college. Working closely with integrators, manufacturers and the college allowed Convergent to meet budget expectations and performance requirements. The district expects this to be a showcase facility for these reasons. This project opened in September of 2010.[/col3]

[slideshow_deploy id=’3145′]

Architect: Architekton

Location: Casa Grande, Arizona

Construction Cost: $23 Million

Project Size: 65,000 gsf

The scope of this project includes a $500,000 design to budget for technology systems to include: multiple data/video projection systems with associated ancillary displays, audiovisual & multi-media enhanced presentations, videoconferencing, audio/video recording sessions, and monaural speech audio reinforcement along with associated infrastructure. This building will include spaces to support the Fire and Police Departments. The types of spaces to receive audiovisual technology systems include: an Emergency Operations Center (EOC)/60-seat classroom, EOC Conference Room, Briefing Room, sub-dividable Conference Room, Community Room, Fitness Center and Lobby. The EOC is a technology rich space which includes the ability to control and monitor Casa Grande utilizing four flat panel displays throughout the space to monitor local TV channels, and computer aided dispatch feeds with ancillary plasma displays, combined monaural program/speech audio reinforcement, and central control stations featuring an IP addressable remote control system, digital annotation, as well as, audio/video preview. Unique to the EOC is a curved front-projection screen with multi-window processor. Additionally, synchronous videoconferencing capabilities are also located in this space. Computer Aided Dispatch displays are available throughout the facility. Project scope included complete programming narrative system overview descriptions and detailed per space cost estimating for all technology systems. Design challenges included maximizing the front video projection screen within the pie-shaped space without encroaching into the room itself and providing flexibility to grow and adapt to future governmental operational needs. The project was completed in 2011.

Arizona State University & University of Arizona – Arizona Biomedical Collaborative Building

[col3]

The Arizona Biomedical Collaborative Building #1 (ABC) was a joint venture project between the University of Arizona and Arizona State University (ASU). The scope of this project featured educational technology systems including audiovisual presentation and recording, speech reinforcement, custom smart presenter’s lecterns, distance learning, touchpanel remote control systems, and digital annotation. Fixed audiovisual systems were specified for a small conference room, medium conference room, and large mediated conference room. Custom portable carts consisting of a plasma display, digital annotation overlay, and ancillary sources were specified to be used throughout the building in order to promote collaboration utilizing educational technology. Project opportunities to incorporate distance-learning capabilities in the large mediated conference room were successful in remotely connecting this new research building with the rest of the ASU & University of Arizona campuses. Additional responsibilities included acoustics, noise & vibration control for spaces receiving audiovisual systems including sound isolation, interior room acoustics, and mechanical systems noise control. This project has been complete since July 2007.

143,000 gsf renovation/ 70,000 gsf expansion

In the midst of a severe national economic recession, Arizona State University students voted to increase student recreation fees in order to fund design and construction of an expanded and renovated Student Recreation Complex. Extensively involved in the pre-programming of the facility, students looked to consolidate the various locations throughout the community where intramural sports had been relocated. The new facility will include new competition fields, a large gym with multiple courts, in addition to strength /cardio, multi-purpose and student health/wellness spaces. Convergent Technologies’ scope for this project includes complete design services for audiovisual presentation systems and telecommunications cabling systems design. Additionally, acoustical analysis for interior room finish recommendations was provided for all high-bay gymnasium spaces along with the design of sound isolating partitions between the existing Small Gymnasium and adjacent office spaces.
