LOCATION:
Westminster, MD

ARCHITECT:
Marshall Craft Associates
Baltimore, MD

PROJECT BUDGET:
$3.5 million

PROJECT SIZE:
14,200 GSF

Description
About 22 years after construction, McDaniel College’s entire Hoover Library is underwent a three-phase renovation. As part of Phase II and Phase III of this renovation, Convergent Technologies was asked to provide audiovisual systems electronics design and specifications for two meeting/events rooms, a group study room, and a reference/IT desk area. Hoover’s renovation features a new information literacy interactive learning classroom. The space features specially designed tables for teaching in the round and technology-enable spaces that support students’ changing patterns of learning and innovation. The space should become of student destination for spirited group study and collaboration, team building, academic coaching and quite study. CTDG’s work on this project contributed to bringing the latest videoconferencing technology to the library – a resource expected to feature speakers from around the world for the college community. The scope of design work for this project included identifying locations and specifications of audiovisual systems; including flat panel displays; video cameras; and presentation lecterns. Project deliverables include construction management of the specified areas. The project opened in late spring 2013.

SUNY Oswego – Penfield Library Renovation Programming

[col3]The Penfield Library had received some critical maintenance and preservation upgrades over the past 40 years, but was in need of substantial critical maintenance items as well as some plant adaptation. Programmatically, this library of the future will increasingly be called upon to partner with faculty, staff and students in the analysis, evaluation, and communication of information and knowledge. New modes of course delivery, expanded use of distance education, more fluid boundaries between disciplines, and a greater diversity among the students on our residential campus will all have a great effect on the function of the library. These changes will spur physical and virtual adaptations in Penfield Library allowing it to play an increasingly important role supporting the learning-centered mission of SUNY Oswego. The study looked into a minimum of three (3) design solutions, or “facility development alternatives” to develop alternate approaches to upgrading facilities for Penfield Library. These solutions explored adaptive reuse of the existing facility. CTDG’s scope of work for this project involves a program study providing telecommunications cabling systems and audiovisual systems design services for the SUNY at Oswego (SUNY) Penfield Library Program Study to be located in Oswego, New York. CTDG conducted a review of existing conditions survey and SUNY standards for the audiovisual and telecommunications cable systems. The project continued with communication with the facility’s design team, identifying the general locations and quantities throughout the project in which audiovisual and telecommunications cable components would be located and should be housed. Important to design team considerations were locations such as audiovisual equipment rooms, ceiling heights, control rooms, and raised floor areas requiring tight coordination.[/col3]

Description:
Part of the north campus revitalization project, a five year construction effort, the Welch Hall refurbishment project links the north and south parts of the campus together with a twenty-first century library and state-of-the-art meeting rooms. The historic nature of the five-story, 1929 Beaux Arts building required that certain elements were preserved while incorporating modern technology requirements. Centerpiece to the project is a historically accurate renovation to the second floor reading room which now houses public computers, coffee lounge and periodicals. The North Room (also known as the Audubon Room) now provides meeting room space. Below this, the A&B levels now house stacks, study areas and meeting rooms, in addition to dedicated spaces for first year graduate students. Scope for this project included complete design services for Telecommunications Cabling Systems and supporting infrastructure. Construction Manager at Risk Delivery Method, LEED Gold Certified, the building re-opened in April of 2013.

The scope of this project includes complete design services for telecommunications cabling systems for all voice, data and RF outlets, audiovisual systems and access control/video surveillance systems as it relates to the new branch libraries in the Arbor Hill/West Hill and New Scotland neighborhoods. The Library’s Board of Trustee’s Design Review Committee is working closely with the design team and project manager, the Dormitory Authority of New York, to ensure a timely and cost-efficient completion. Throughout the design process feedback and suggestions from the communities have influenced the designs of the libraries. The Arbor Hill/West Hill and New Scotland neighborhoods have attended Board meetings which gave them the opportunity to respond to the library designs. Additional Responsibilities include preparing cost estimates for all specified telecommunications cabling, audiovisual and security systems, reviewing existing standards for telecommunications cabling, audiovisual and security systems and establishing new standards for access control/video surveillance systems. The project is two year design and construction process was completed in 2010.[/col3]
