University of Maryland, Biopark – Maryland Proton Treatment Center

LOCATION: Baltimore, MD
PROJECT MANGER: Advanced Particle Therapy, LLC, San Diego, California
ARCHITECT/CONSTRUCTION: Haskell Architects & Engineers, P.A., Jacksonville, FL
DEVELOPER: Signet Development, Jacksonville, Florida
CONSTRUCTION COST: $200 MILLION

When finished, the Maryland Proton Treatment Center will bring this leading-edge cancer therapy that uses precision proton beams to the greater Mid-Atlantic region. Located in the University of Maryland BioPark at the university’s Baltimore campus, the treatment center will house five treatment rooms, dedicated research and training spaces, and also feature ground-floor retail space. Advanced Particle Therapy, the center’s parent company, asked Convergent Technology (CTDG) to provide design services and construction administration for audiovisual systems with supporting infrastructure and LAN, PBX, and Wi-Fi Electronics. Also included in the scope of work was a peer review of the access control/ video surveillance systems. The types of spaces receiving CTDG’s technology-design services and review also include a conference room, lobby, staff lounge, patient waiting room, and main telecomm room. Currently the project is in the Construction Administration phase. The center’s construction began in April 2012 and by mid-2015 the center is slated to be open and annually treating 1,900 patients.

DESCRIPTION
Located on the Cincinnati Children’s Medical Center Liberty Campus, the new proton facility will include two proton treatment rooms for clinical use, with the option for future expansion to add a third. Proton therapy provides a non-invasive, painless, extremely targeted radiation treatment for tumors. This form of therapy is particularly relevant for children as they do not have to be subjected to needless exposure from damaging radiation. There are approximately eleven such treatment centers nationally, with fifteen additional projects planned or in design. CTDG will provide telecommunications, audiovisual, and security systems design services for the project. The scope of this project includes infrastructure design to support all low voltage systems. A three year design and construction effort, this project began in 2014. Anticipated completion for the project is 2017.

Emory Healthcare – Georgia Proton Treatment Center

[col3]

There are currently only nine such facilities in the U.S. The first of its kind in Georgia and funded by The Georgia Proton Treatment Center, the new center will treat up to 1,900 patients annually. Included in the center are five treatment rooms (four with rotational gantries and one with a fixed beam) and dedicated research capabilities. Emory Healthcare, a part of the Emory University Robert W. Woodruff Health Sciences Center, will partner with Georgia Tech and other institutions to conduct research in the center.

The scope of this project includes the design of all Telecommunications Cabling Systems and LAN Electronics for the operation of Emory Clinical telecommunications functionalities, as well as the design of Telecommunications Cabling Systems to support the operation of specialized Proton Treatment equipment including proton accelerators. Other services include the design of Emergency Paging Audio systems, Video Surveillance, Access Control, Intrusion Detection, and Audiovisual Systems.[/col3]

Location:

Construction Cost:

Project Size:

Description
Project responsibilities for the University of Pennsylvania Proton Facility is to provide telecommunications cabling systems and associated infrastructure for voice, data, Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), Cable Antenna Television (CATV), access control and intercommunications systems. The design for this state of the art radiation treatment facility was implemented in not only the four underground gantry areas which hold the 90 ton machines used to deliver the radiation treatment, but also in the surrounding control rooms and nurse and technician stations. Access control systems were designed such that access was accomplished using a proximity card reader and electrified lock set with authorizations controlled via a central database. Networked surveillance systems were implemented in the entrance of treatment rooms, hallways and common areas which could be monitored from either a central computer room via CCTV or through IP-based access to the Network Video Recorder. Intercommunication systems are designed to allow two-way audio communication from sub-stations located in the gantry areas and technician control rooms, back to a master station located in the main control room. Construction of the Proton Facility has been complete since 2009.
