Description
The scope of this project includes complete design for all telecommunications and audiovisual infrastructure as it relates to the renovation of Henderson Hall, the oldest building on the Virginia Tech campus. Space plans include: a 8,000 sq. ft. Black Box theater addition, theater support spaces, music practice rooms, graphics design labs/classrooms, conference rooms, and faculty offices. Specifications include details outlining procedures and methods of connecting to existing campus telecommunications networks. Project challenges include working within the existing building framework to provide state of the art telecommunications and audiovisual systems infrastructure. Project highlights include working with in-house Virginia Tech Communications Network Services in designing the telecommunications infrastructure for the new building including telecommunications room sizing, power requirements, environmental requirements, heat load design criteria, telecommunications room lighting and finishes, grounding and bonding for telecommunications equipment, and building entrance protection. The project has been successfully complete since 2009.

Virginia Commonwealth University – Institute for Contemporary Arts

[col3]This nationally ranked School of the Arts building includes distinctive and unique design reflecting the University’s artistic excellence. The facility consists of exhibition galleries, ground floor reception area with a catering kitchen, a lecture hall, loading dock with work room, administrative offices, and a small classroom/teaching lab. The new Institute for Contemporary Arts is located on the Monroe Park Campus of the Virginia Commonwealth University. Convergent Technologies is providing complete design services for telecommunications cabling systems infrastructure, room acoustics, interior sound isolation, and HVAC noise control design services. Spaces to receive technology design systems include: 210 Seat Theatre, Lecture Hall, Classroom/Teaching Lab, and Gallery Spaces. This project is scheduled to be complete in 2015.[/col3]

Longwood University – Bedford Hall Renovation & Expansion

[col3]The scope of this Longwood University project includes complete design services for the following technology systems: telecommunications cabling infrastructure for voice, data, and RF Video, and audiovisual presentation systems infrastructure. Bedford Hall is home to the university’s studio and visual arts programs including graphic design, art education, photography, painting, crafts, art history and drawing. Space plans include renovating approximately 26,000 gross square feet of existing classrooms, laboratories, shops, studios, galleries and offices. The three-story 49,000 square foot addition will also include space plans for additional classrooms, laboratories, shops, studios, galleries and offices. Specified systems include infrastructure for custom instructor’s stations, audio reinforcement systems, multimedia presentation systems, and local area networking. Specifications also include details outlining procedures and methods of connecting to existing campus telecommunications networks. Additional design responsibilities include the review of building criteria as they apply to acoustics, noise and vibration, the development of acoustical criteria for HVAC equipment noise levels and sound isolation, and recommendations for room layout, shaping, and acoustical finishes. Project deliverables captured a complete system infrastructure programming narrative for all educational technology systems. This project is currently in the Construction Documents phase with estimated completion expected in time for Spring 2012 occupancy.[/col3]

Millersville University – Visual & Performing Arts Center

Scope of work for the new Visual and Performing Arts Center at Millersville University includes the renovation of 29,041 square feet and a 59,452 square foot expansion of the existing Lyte Auditorium/Alumni Hall. Lyte Auditorium is the main campus venue for recitals, student produced musicals, and the annual Cultural Affairs Committee Series. Convergent Technologies provided complete design services for telecommunications cabling systems, public address/paging system, and access control/video surveillance security systems with associated supporting infrastructure as they relate to this project. The newly renovated building will house the Music Department, hold approximately 650-seats and feature a concert hall, recital/rehearsal hall, piano lab, multipurpose dance hall, classrooms, music library, recording studio, department offices, an art gallery, scene shop and theatre. This project is part of the university’s master plan and is expected to improve and enhance the visual and performing arts programs on campus. Project responsibilities include design and specifications for all telecommunications cabling systems, video/CATV system and a reverse 911 mass notification paging system. This project is currently in the Construction Administration phase and is scheduled to be complete by the fall of 2011.

Towson University – Center for Fine Arts

[col3]The scope of this project included an acoustical review of existing Construction Documents as well as subsequent acoustical design services as they relate to the efforts to improve the noise transmission between adjacent 2nd and 3rd floor music faculty offices. Convergent Technologies performed a site survey to examine sound transmission at the exterior curtain wall of the Towson University College of Fine Arts. The purpose of the site survey was to determine sound transmission paths and develop modifications to reduce noise transmission. The analysis performed in this project included an evaluation of room shaping and its impact on reflected sound levels, as well as calculations of reverberation time. This project has been successfully complete since June 2008.[/col3]

Peabody Conservatory of Music – Recording Studio Renovation

[col3]The scope of this project included electronics and acoustical design services for the Recording Arts Department multi-track recording studios. Supported functions of the studios include live recording of all orchestral, opera, wind ensemble, chamber music, jazz, and choral events on campus as well as professional quality studio recording for the entire Hopkins community. Studio 220 is fully equipped with digital multitrack recording and automated mixdown facilities and is linked to two of Peabody’s Performance Halls. The studio is capable of mixing and recording in stereo, 5.1, 7.1 surround and LCRS to a variety of digital audio workstations, digital audio tape, compact discs, and a digital multitrack recorder. The entire system is time code capable and is locked to house word clock. The facility is also capable of full audio-for-video post production with DV-Cam, DVD mastering, and a non-linear video editing suite. The monitoring system assignment and fold down (with bass management) is configured by a multiformat monitor controller which feeds the surround monitor system. The Leakin Hall Studio includes an analog mixdown room and control room for the Leakin Recital Hall. This three room facility houses an analog automated console, digital multi-track recorder, a wide range of processing equipment and monitoring systems, full MIDI capability, a Hi-8 video editing system, and a variety digital editing workstations. Our designers also provided all acoustics, noise and vibration control consulting for the project. Responsibilities included development of acoustical criteria for HVAC equipment noise levels, sound isolation, room shaping, and acoustical finishes. This project has been successfully complete since June 2001.[/col3]

Montgomery County – Strathmore Performing Arts Center

[col3]Convergent Technologies Design Group (CTDG) was asked by Washington Professional Systems (WPS) to conduct an analysis of proposed audiovisual systems for the Strathmore Performing Arts Center located in Bethesda, MD. The analysis included quality control review of signal flow, control flow, furniture details, and plan and elevation details provided by WPS. Founded in 1981, Strathmore is located on a scenic 11-acre site and is committed to providing multi-disciplinary arts programming. It maintains a resident partnership with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the national Philharmonic, and the Washington Performing Arts Society.[/col3]

Enoch Pratt Free Library – Renovation & Annex Addition Children’s Garden Theater

[col3]The scope of this project included a $125,000.00 design to budget for audiovisual & multimedia systems to include: stereo surround sound program audio, videoconferencing, audiovisual presentation and recording. The primary space to receive audiovisual & multimedia systems was a 175-Seat Theater with projection/videoconference capability and a custom millwork equipment rack unit housing all audiovisual source, processing and loudspeaker systems. Project responsibilities included: complete specifications for all audiovisual/multimedia and RF video cabling systems, complete acoustical analysis and room finishes criteria, and project management through bidding & negotiations, concluding with construction administration through systems testing and acceptance. Systems that were specified for the theater included a six channel stereo surround sound program audio system that compliments a high light output projection system with touchpanel remote control. Design meetings included discussions with both design team project managers and the owner’s technical representatives to establish and verify existing standards for the to be specified technology components, as well as, value engineering exercises to maintain project budget. The project was a three-year, multi-phase design project. The project has been successfully complete since June 2002.[/col3]

[col3]The scope of this project includes complete design services relating to acoustics, noise and vibration control, as well as, audio recording and presentation systems to supplement the music, dance and athletic programs planned to reside in the new building. Space plans includes Band/Choral Rooms, Music Practice Rooms, Dance Studio, Music Classrooms, and a Gymnasium. Acoustical criteria was developed for all musical spaces outlining recommended room reverberation times, room shaping, proportions, and adjacencies, and specialty acoustical finishes. Responsibilities also included the development of acoustical criteria for HVAC equipment noise levels, sound isolation, and room acoustical and floor slab vibration properties for all acoustically sensitive spaces throughout the facility. Project challenges included the design of an integrated music and athletic center to support both programs independently. The project has been successfully complete since September 2007.[/col3]

Calhoon MEBA Engineering School – Auditorium Renovation

The Marine Engineers Beneficial Association (MEBA) is world renown for providing state of the art professional training to today’s professional marine engineers, captains, and deck officers in this educational facility. The scope of this project included complete audiovisual and acoustical design services for a 200-seat multipurpose auditorium at the Calhoon MEBA School of Engineering. Involvement in programming & design services, preparation of construction documents, bidding document review, and construction administration services were a key component of this project. The auditorium features audiovisual presentation, program/speech audio reinforcement, surround sound audio, and audio/video production capabilities, recording & editing facilities, and performance quality room acoustics. Key design team contributions included the development of acoustical criteria including recommendations for room shaping, finishes, HVAC equipment noise levels, sound isolation, and room acoustical and floor slab vibration properties. A truly multi-functional space, the facility hosts regional chamber music festival performances on an annual basis with great success. The project has been successfully complete and operational since November 2004.
