City of Alexandria – Public Council Hearing Chambers Historic Renovations

[col3]The scope of this project consisted of an acoustical study and the design of a replacement audio system for the historic City Council Chambers Hearing Room. Measurements and analysis of the existing audio and video systems were performed and reported on. New system features included mix-minus technology, gain normalization, incorporation of local monitoring at the Dias, redistribution of speech/program audience reinforcement, DSP processing, and microphone grouping to increase gain before feedback. The audio interface with the video production control room was redesigned, addressing the issue of unreliable audio signal levels within the room being broadcast across the Community Antenna Television System (CATV) to city residents. The scope of this project also included the design of a new video presentation system. New system features included local video monitoring at the Dias, large format audience displays, and secondary closed captioning monitors for the hearing impaired. Infrastructure was planned to the Comcast distribution facility, improving broadcast quality images and display of high-resolution sources. Enhancements to the existing video system included laptop connections for the city council members, public audience, and support staff personnel. CATV distribution was expanded to support in room display of broadcast signals as well as closed captioning distribution. Project challenges included a fast track project schedule, interaction between design team and on-call installation contractors, as well as, elements related to a project with historical preservation requirements. The first phase of this multi-phase renovation/upgrade project has been complete since January 2004. Future phases are to include upgrade of audiovisual presentation systems and supporting ancillary overflow space viewing/listening rooms.[/col3]

Villanova University – School of Law

[col3]This scope of this project included assessment of a noise disturbance emanating from a nearby chiller plant, with disruptive tonal components. Research of local jurisdiction codes governing acceptable outside sound levels were researched for West Shore County to provide input for calculations determining possible barrier construction. Acoustical measurements were performed at the school to assess property line noise and close-in equipment noise emissions. Calculations were made to determine noise levels transmitted to the exterior due to use of the chiller unit. These noise levels were compared to ambient noise level and property line noise criteria stipulated by the local building authority. Recommendations to solve the noise disturbance were in the form of barrier construction details, sound absorption treatment on the building walls, and chiller silencing techniques such as duct attenuators and compressor caps. The project has been successful complete since March 2002.[/col3]

CONSTRUCTION COST:
$70 MILLION

GROSS SQUARE FOOTAGE:
160,000gsf

The scope of this project included the design and construction of a new state courthouse in Rockville, Maryland. The facility provides new space for the District Court, Parole and Probation/Intake Unit, Office of the Public Defender, and the Maryland Department of General Services. The six floor building includes space plans for typical courtrooms, traffic courtroom, hearing rooms, a multipurpose room and judges chambers. Convergent Technologies provided acoustics analysis, testing and measurement services for the courthouse in order to determine the noise impact of a power generator at the established property line. Scope of work included the review of existing design documents for the required louvered vent and exterior partition details and the review of the octave band sound power levels generated by the power generator within the facility. CTDG also determined the necessary sound isolation requirements for the building to comply with the applicable Montgomery County Noise ordinances at the property line. An acoustics narrative report was developed outlining findings, results and recommendations.
