Elizabeth Seton High School — Center for Sports & Fine Arts

[col3]The scope of this project includes complete design services relating to acoustics, noise and vibration control, as well as, audio recording and presentation systems to supplement the music, dance and athletic programs planned to reside in the new building. Space plans includes Band/Choral Rooms, Music Practice Rooms, Dance Studio, Music Classrooms, and a Gymnasium. Acoustical criteria was developed for all musical spaces outlining recommended room reverberation times, room shaping, proportions, and adjacencies, and specialty acoustical finishes. Responsibilities also included the development of acoustical criteria for HVAC equipment noise levels, sound isolation, and room acoustical and floor slab vibration properties for all acoustically sensitive spaces throughout the facility. Project challenges included the design of an integrated music and athletic center to support both programs independently. The project has been successfully complete since September 2007.[/col3]

Construction Cost:
$4 Million

Project Size:
10,000 gsf

The Marine Engineers Beneficial Association (MEBA) is world renown for providing state of the art professional training to today’s professional marine engineers, captains, and deck officers in this educational facility. The scope of this project included complete audiovisual and acoustical design services for a 200-seat multipurpose auditorium at the Calhoon MEBA School of Engineering. Involvement in programming & design services, preparation of construction documents, bidding document review, and construction administration services were a key component of this project. The auditorium features audiovisual presentation, program/speech audio reinforcement, surround sound audio, and audio/video production capabilities, recording & editing facilities, and performance quality room acoustics. Key design team contributions included the development of acoustical criteria including recommendations for room shaping, finishes, HVAC equipment noise levels, sound isolation, and room acoustical and floor slab vibration properties. A truly multi-functional space, the facility hosts regional chamber music festival performances on an annual basis with great success. The project has been successfully complete and operational since November 2004.

United States Army – Advanced Individual Training Barracks

[slideshow_deploy id=’3594′]

Architects:

  • Michael Baker Jr., Inc. – Alexandria, Virginia
  • W.G. Yates & Sons Construction – Fort Gordon, Georgia

Location:
Fort Gordon, Georgia

Project Budget:
$14,400,000

Gross Square Footage:
91,000 square feet

Fort Gordon, Georgia is home to the U.S. Army Signal Corps and Signal Center, which trains more military personnel than any other training center of the U.S. Army. The main component of the post is the Advanced Individual Training for Signal Corps military occupational specialties. With the installation of the new Barracks, Convergent Technologies provided acoustical design services for interior sound isolation as well as noise and vibration control. This included analysis of the radiated, structure-born, and inlet/outlet octave-band sound power levels for HVAC equipment in addition to recommendations for Sound Transmission Class (STC) ratings of partition types and floor slab/ceiling construction. Analysis and calculation were delivered in the form of a narrative report, which also contained details for selected partition types based on the recommended acoustical design criteria. Acoustical recommendations for doors and acoustical seals and details for caulking, closure at pipe and duct penetrations and partition intersections were also provided. The sound isolation analysis also included the study of the sleeping quarters, with recommendations on the construction of partitions and ductwork layout between various spaces. Convergent’s services commenced with the Construction Documents phase of the project. This project was completed in early 2011.

Kennedy Center – South Block Renovations Project

[slideshow_deploy id=’3359′]

Project:
Kennedy Center

Architect:
Grimm + Parker Architects

Location:
Washington, D.C.

Construction Cost:
$5 MILLION

Gross Square Footage:
22,500 square feet

The scope of this project includes digital audio systems, room acoustics, interior sound isolation, and HVAC noise control design services for the South Block Renovations at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. The Kennedy Center, America’s living memorial to President John F. Kennedy and the nation’s busiest arts facility, produces and presents a variety of theater and musicals, dance and ballet, orchestral, chamber, jazz, popular, world and folk music and multi-media performances. The South Block Renovations has several components including the redesign of all support spaces for the Main Concert Hall (the largest venue at the Kennedy Center). This includes all dressing rooms, rehearsal rooms, practice rooms, instrument storage rooms, locker rooms, office spaces, etc. As part of this task, the piano storage area will be relocated for grand pianos used in the Main Concert Hall; this new room will require specialized temperature and humidity control to address the sensitivities of these instruments. Additionally, we have been asked to identify acoustical deficiencies and MEP system deficiencies within the Main Concert Hall and propose design solutions.
