University of MD, College Park – Tawes Building Conversion

Scope of work for the Tawes Fine Arts Building Conversion included the design of acoustics, noise and vibration control, telecommunications cabling systems with associated supporting infrastructure and infrastructure for audiovisual systems. The facility was constructed in 1965 and has been primarily used for the fine arts program. Since the construction of the new performing arts center on the College Park campus the Tawes building has been underutilized and has served as surge/overflow space. The English Department at the University of Maryland is a core academic program and the conversion will provide a new home for the offices and classrooms associated with the English department in lieu of several buildings across campus. Project responsibilities included the review of existing campus standards for designed systems, cost estimating, and production of contract drawings and specifications. Additional project responsibilities included the review of building criteria for all acoustically sensitive spaces within the building. The scope of this project commenced at the Schematic Design phase and construction was completed in the summer of 2009.
