Convergent Technologies was asked to provide all acoustics, noise and vibration control, telecommunications cabling systems, and audiovisual systems with infrastructure design services for the redevelopment of the Integrative and Quantitative Science Center (IQ Center) located in Lexington, Virginia. The space will support interdisciplinary, collaborative, and quantitative programs of integrated research and teaching for students enrolled at the University. Space plans include: a traditional computer visualization lab, 3-D high performance visualization lab, physical/mechanical experimentation lab, an analytical instruments suite, printing room for project development, and a meeting/study area for informal gathering. Educational technology systems include: 20 dual-head workstations with dual-screen projectors, 3-D projector screens where visual data can be manipulated in projectors for collaborative use, microscope rooms with video cameras to facilitate teaching reinforcement, telecommunications outlets to support all computers, phones, and audiovisual equipment, and multiple digital signage displays to demonstrate IQ center activities. Design considerations include: flexible infrastructure, interconnectivity between classrooms and laboratories, bring your own device capabilities, and integration with library information systems and resources. Additional project responsibilities include an analysis for interior room acoustics, sound isolation, and HVAC noise/vibration control because the microscopes are susceptible to mechanical vibrations. This project is expected to be complete May, 2013.
