Acoustics, Audiovisual, Projects, Theaters and Performing Arts

Baltimore Lutheran – Fine Arts Theater Building

[col3]This design project featured an 800-seat theater and auditorium space, band rooms, practice rooms & classroom instructional spaces. Professional services included acoustics, noise and vibration analysis as well as performance audio system and digital projection systems. Project responsibilities include: complete specifications for all audiovisual/multimedia systems; design of supporting infrastructure, power and heat load information for stage, pit, and projection/control room; project management through bidding & negotiations, concluding with construction administration project management through systems testing and acceptance. Scopes of design responsibilities commenced in schematic design and were completed with construction administration services. Systems specified for the auditorium included a combined program audio & mono speech system that compliments a high output projection system featuring LCD data/video projection. Primary system features included: stage infrastructure to support drama/theater productions, wireless microphones, and portable audio monitoring for stage presenters. Systems to satisfy both ADA and various presentation set-ups were considered for final design within this exciting hall. Project challenges included the development of acoustical criteria for room shaping and adjacencies, HVAC equipment noise levels, sound isolation, and room acoustical and floor slab vibration properties for this steel constructed building.[/col3]

Architect:
Wheeler Goodman Masek Architects

Location:
Glen Burnie, Maryland

Construction Cost:
$2 Million

Project Size:
24,000 gsf

The scope of this project includes a $ 750,000.00 design to budget for technology systems to include: telecommunications cabling (voice, data, RF Video), audiovisual & multi-media enhanced presentations, videoconferencing, audio/video recording sessions, surround sound program & speech audio reinforcement along with custom presenter’s stations with associated infrastructure. The types of spaces to receive technology systems include: Community Theater, Emergency Operations Center (EOC), Emergency Management Conference Room, and a Strategic Planning Conference Room. Features of the EOC include combined monaural program/speech audio reinforcement, custom audio monitoring, a three-projector data/video wall, and the ability to monitor local and county traffic and other critical response video circuits located throughout the area. Additional design responsibilities included the review of building criteria as they applied to acoustics, noise and vibration control, the development of acoustical criteria for HVAC equipment noise levels and sound isolation, and recommendations for room layout, shaping, and acoustical finishes for the Community Theater. Project scope included complete programming narrative system overview descriptions and detailed per space cost estimating for all technology systems. Challenges included renovating an existing facility with state of the art EOC functionality and providing flexibility to grow and adapt to future governmental operational needs. The project has been complete since March 2007.

Kennedy Center – South Block Renovations Project

[slideshow_deploy id=’3359′]

Project:
Kennedy Center

Architect:
Grimm + Parker Architects

Location:
Washington, D.C.

Construction Cost:
$5 MILLION

Gross Square Footage:
22,500 square feet

The scope of this project includes digital audio systems, room acoustics, interior sound isolation, and HVAC noise control design services for the South Block Renovations at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. The Kennedy Center, America’s living memorial to President John F. Kennedy and the nation’s busiest arts facility, produces and presents a variety of theater and musicals, dance and ballet, orchestral, chamber, jazz, popular, world and folk music and multi-media performances. The South Block Renovations has several components including the redesign of all support spaces for the Main Concert Hall (the largest venue at the Kennedy Center). This includes all dressing rooms, rehearsal rooms, practice rooms, instrument storage rooms, locker rooms, office spaces, etc. As part of this task, the piano storage area will be relocated for grand pianos used in the Main Concert Hall; this new room will require specialized temperature and humidity control to address the sensitivities of these instruments. Additionally, we have been asked to identify acoustical deficiencies and MEP system deficiencies within the Main Concert Hall and propose design solutions.

Architect:
Orcutt/Winslow Partnership

Location:
Scottsdale, Arizona

Construction Cost:
$46 Million

Project Size:
250,000 gsf

Convergent Technologies provided all acoustics, noise and vibration control consulting for this Performing/Visual Arts Building, including involvement in design development drawings, preparation of construction documents, and bidding document review. Space plans include a 900-seat performance auditorium along with supporting music practice rooms, music classrooms, physical education area (gymnasium and supporting spaces) and fine arts classrooms. Acoustical criteria were developed for the auditorium including recommendations for the outer envelope, interior shaping, stage shell, and stage size. Responsibilities also included the development of acoustical criteria for room adjacencies, HVAC equipment noise levels, sound isolation, and room acoustical and floor slab vibration properties for all acoustically sensitive spaces throughout the facility. Project opportunities included an integrated music and arts suite which successfully supports both programs. The project was a three-year multi-phase design and construction effort with a construction completion date of April 2008.
